A manure spreader is a type of agricultural machine that, as its name implies, can spread manure on the land. This machine helps evenly distribute muck, farmyard manure, fertiliser or compost over farmland, which helps with fertilising soil and growing crops. Depending on the type of manure being spread, the operation of the manure spreader varies. For example, solid manure is loaded into a hopper at the rear of the machine. Both types of trailers serve a common purpose. Despite these vehicles serving the same interests, there are some differences between a manure spreader and a fertiliser spreader. For example, manure spreaders are mainly used to spread solid manure, while fertiliser spreaders are mainly used to spread granular or powdery fertiliser on the land. Here, the main functions of a manure spreader are to shred large pieces of solid manure into smaller particles and spread them over the field to promote the fertility of the land. Fertiliser spreaders also do this but with other types of manure that promote fertilisation of the land. Fertiliser spreaders focus more on precisely dosing fertiliser, helping to meet the nutritional needs of the crops in the field.
Within these two types of machines, there is also a distinction in the way they spread manure. For example, a wide spreader allows manure to be spread over a large amount of land at the same time. Drop spreaders allow manure to be spread directly under the machine, giving great control over where the fertiliser falls. Thanks to rotors on a lateral manure spreader, it is also possible to spread or spray manure over one side of the spreader. The latter type is particularly useful when fertilising field edges, ditches or specific rows of crops.
The weight and size of a manure spreader can vary greatly. For example, the empty weight of a manure spreader starts as low as 500 kilograms for a smaller single axle and can reach well over 12 tons for large and sophisticated machines. Depending on the undercarriage, a smaller manure spreader can easily carry 4 to 5 tons of manure, while larger manure spreaders can carry dozens of tons.
