In addition to forklifts, there are also reach trucks. These reach trucks are known for their speed and flexibility. Thanks to their design, they require very little room to move. This allows them to easily operate in narrow and high aisles where effectiveness is desired. Thanks to rail guidance, the mast of a reach truck can be extended and retracted within the support arms. With the mast retracted, the load's centre of gravity remains within the support legs, while with the mast extended, the load is in front of the support wheels, and the truck acts as a counterweight. Reach trucks are distinguished by a high lift height, which can reach up to 11 metres, and by the driver's transverse seating position for optimal visibility. They come standard with solid tyres, but for occasional outdoor use, they can also be supplied with pneumatic tyres for more traction. Thus, reach trucks can be used both indoors and outdoors.
A stacker is driven with a tiller, making its appearance and operation similar to that of a pump truck. As with pallet trucks, we also distinguish between two main types of stacker trucks: the ride-on stacker and the multi-row stacker. The ride-on stacker has a foldable platform, ideal for transport over longer distances. Because the cargo is kept within the dimensions of the truck, less counterweight is needed. This ensures that the stacker can also be used efficiently in more confined spaces.
A pump truck, also known as a pallet truck, is among the most compact way to move pallets quickly and easily within any business. A pump truck is manually operated and can be used to move pallets over short distances. A pump truck comes in handy, especially when loading a truck. Its compact turning radius makes it ideal to use a pump truck in tight spaces.
To move loads to high altitudes, forklifts have various counterweights. Different specifications are needed in each work area to complete various jobs. Unlike reach trucks, which move loads between axles, counterbalance forklifts have the load's centre of gravity in front. They use the counterweight principle to balance the load; electric forklift trucks do this with heavy batteries, while diesel forklift and gas models use additional weights. The front axle serves as a tipping point, which keeps the truck and load balanced. A forklift truck typically has a counterweight of 2 tons, 2.5 tons, 3.0 tons, 3.5 tons, and up to 5.0 tons.
Within forklift masts, we distinguish between about four types of masts. For example, there is a simplex mast, which can only lift over a limited distance. These are often used to take cargo off a truck and can only lift the height of the mast. This is followed by the duplex mast, which can rise up to a maximum of twice the mast, lifting to somewhat greater heights. Next is the plywood mast. A plywood mast is distinguished from a duplex mast by the presence of two sliding rails and one fixed rail. This type of mast is often used on reach trucks because it allows loads to extend farther, thus covering greater distances. Next is the quad mast. The name already indicates that this advanced mast uses four sets of rails and chains to move loads. Operating this type of mast often requires specialised training because it allows for significantly higher heights, which can sometimes result in limited visibility for the forklift operator.
