Winter is unavoidable, and so are winter tires. To ensure winter tires meet the required standards, specific symbols are used. Until recently, the M+S marking (Mud and Snow) was widely applied. However, starting in the autumn of 2024, some countries will require a different marking: the snowflake symbol. Which countries are introducing this legislation and what it entails are explained in this article.
To demonstrate that a tire meets the required winter tire standards, specific symbols are used. As mentioned earlier, the M+S marking was previously the standard and is found on 95% of truck tires. However, in Germany, France, Austria, and Sweden, changes will be implemented starting in autumn 2024. From then on, winter tires must bear the snowflake symbol, also known as the 3PMSF symbol (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake). This symbol ensures better performance under winter conditions.

Changes to winter tire regulations will take place in certain countries. To provide you with a clear overview, we’ve outlined the new rules per country:
From October 1, 2024, trucks must be equipped with tires bearing the snowflake symbol on both the steering and driven axles. The use of winter tires is mandatory during winter weather conditions such as snow or ice.
Additional Rules: Snow chains are required when indicated by road signs. They may only be used when the road is completely covered with snow or ice. The minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, although 4 mm is recommended for optimal safety. Snow and ice must be completely removed from vehicles, including roofs, before hitting the road.
Between November 1 and April 15, trucks over 3.5 tons must have winter tires with the snowflake symbol (3PMSF) on at least one driven axle. The minimum tread depth is: 5 mm for radial tires, 6 mm for diagonal tires.
Additional Rules: Trucks must carry snow chains during this period. They are required on roads where indicated by signs. Drivers must clear all snow and ice from their vehicles, including the roof, before driving.
Starting November 1, 2024, only tires with the snowflake symbol will be recognized as winter tires. Additionally, winter tires will be mandatory between November 1 and March 31 in specific mountainous regions, marked by road signs.
From December 1, 2024, heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons must have winter tires with the snowflake symbol (3PMSF) on both the front axle and the driven axle. For other axles, tires with M+S marking are permitted until December 1, 2029. Trailers up to 3.5 tons may continue using M+S-marked tires.
Additional Rules: Snow chains may be mandatory in extreme snow or ice conditions. Drivers must remove all snow and ice from vehicles before starting a journey. Temporary driving bans may be imposed during severe weather, such as heavy snowstorms, to allow roads to be cleared.
